Who is Richard Way?

Meet Richard, the visionary leader at the helm of the Sport for Life Society and a key architect behind the Long-Term Development Framework. With a career spanning over 60 sports across 100 countries, Richard has been a driving force in implementing Long-Term Development in Sport and Physical Activity. Collaborating with Istvan Balyi and Dr. Colin Higgs, he co-authored the book, Long-Term Development, showcasing his expertise.

An innovator throughout his career, Richard has dedicated himself to advancing quality sports and fostering physical literacy. His contributions extend to over 100 resources on sport and physical literacy development. Under his guidance, the Sport for Life team earned the Canadian Medical Association's prestigious Award for Excellence in Health Promotion. Recently, the team was a finalist in the Global Design Challenge, addressing the challenges posed by COVID-19 in the realm of sport and physical activity.

As a founding member of the International Physical Literacy Association, Richard's influence extends beyond his role as Founder. His diverse experience includes serving as the Director of Sport for Vancouver's successful 2010 Winter Olympic Games Bid Corporation, a commission member of the International Luge Federation, and a Board member of the Canadian Luge Association.

Richard was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a builder (Multi sports). Throughout Richard has been a catalyst for advancing quality sport. A founding member of the UK-based International Physical Literacy Association, he was instrumental in introducing physical literacy in Canada. Richard was a founder of the International Coaching Conference, the BC Regional Sports Network, the Olympic Youth Academy of BC and the Coaches Association of BC and was a catalyst for the development of the indigenous Long-Term Participant Development Pathway. 

Richard is not just a leader in the boardroom; he is the founder of the Calgary Luge Club and the B.C. Luge Association. His athletic prowess is evident through his representation of Canada in nine natural Luge World Championships and achieving All-Canadian West status in soccer at the University of Calgary. As a proud father to three sporty young adults, Richard embodies a lifelong commitment to the world of sports and physical activity.
